Thankfully, less sneery in tone than most BBC documentaries covering subjects like this. Except Mark had to go and spoil it right at the beginning declaring Marx wrong because "any regime that has to build a wall to keep people in has failed" I paraphrase slightly, but declaring communism wrong or Marx wrong simply because the Russians and Chinese were dictators and torture and imprisonment was widespread, is rather like declaring all capitalists as nazi's simply because of Hitler, Franco and Pinochet. It's a rather specious argument and he rather contradicts himself at the beginning, I'm afraid. Russia and China were never really communist in the true sense anyway. Communism is about the workers taking control of the means of production. This never happened in Russia or China. All that happened was that the state replaced the bosses of private companies. This was state capitalism, not communism. The only country that seems to have got anywhere close to true communism is Cuba, as many farms and businesses are run by workers cooperatives. Yes...undeniably much was wrong to say the least about the regimes in Russia and China, but they were also world leaders in free education, health care and many other social benefits. There was a great deal wrong with Capitalist regimes as well, some would argue more so, but capitalism is not ignorantly written off as failed by large parts of the media. Let's have an end to the hypocrisy, shall we?
